Let’s Make a New Deal

Have you seen all news reports about the LeBron James contract negotiations?  James already makes an incredibly high pay check from the Miami Heat.  On July 1, he was eligible as a free agent.  He announced that he was looking to renegotiate his contract.

The news reports are mixed.  Some say that he is looking for more money.  Some reports say that he is looking to negotiate a longer contract that will take him to retirement.  I don’t know LeBron James, so I really don’t know what the motivation is for him looking for a new contract but when someone makes more than $20,000,000 a year in his current contract the new deal should be massive!

A contract with God

Did you know the Bible talks about a contract with God?  The word “covenant” in your Bible refers to a contract that God made with his people.  The book of Hebrews talks about how the old contract with God was weak and useless- meaning it didn’t have the power to change your heart.  It could only point out that your heart needed to be changed.

Hebrews describes the new contract, or New Covenant as your Bible may refer to it, as a contract between a holy God and sinful man.  This new contract was negotiated in blood- Jesus’ blood.  Therefore, it is unbreakable by God.  Only this new covenant carries with it the power to change your heart.

Too good to turn down

God- the Creator of all mankind- takes the initiative and enters into a contract with sinful man by the death of his son, Jesus.  In this new deal, God offers forgiveness for every sin you’ve ever committed, the promise of changed life, and eternity with him in heaven.  In exchange, he asks for you to make a total commitment to him.  The way I see it- that’s an unbeatable deal.  Maybe LeBron James should remember what the great missionary Jim Elliot once said, “No man is a fool who gives up what he cannot keep to attain what he cannot lose.”
